So lets jump into the questions now. I have seen these questions ahead of time. Dont worry I havent had enough time to do any research around them or anything like that so Im going in this only knowing the questions. So youre going to see my authentic reaction when I answer the questions. So lets jump in. Here we go. Cath Anne: [00:01:18] So question number one. The average yearly cost of tuition is sixty six hundred dollars Canadian, or six thousand six hundred dollars Canadian. OK lets think about that. I want to say that its a little bit more than that however, Im thinking that Im going to say true to this question because I feel like Im thinking that if you lived on campus it would be a little bit more. So lets go with true. Sixty six hundred dollars Canadian is the average tuition cost. Lets see the answer. Cath Anne: [00:02:02] OK. So we were right. It is true. In 2017-2018 Statistics Canada reported that the average yearly tuition was $6,618 CAD. So we were right on the money. We got it right. It was true. So just to compare, in 2017 average tuition was $23,000 USD in four year universities. Holy moly that is a lot. So to break it down a little bit more. Average tuition in the U.S. in that year range from $8,700 in-state public institutions all the way up to twenty nine thousand dollars in private non-profit institutions. Oh my goodness that is so much money to pay for an education. But education is valuable so thats still a lot of money now. Sixty six hundred dollars Canadian might not sound like a lot. However lets think about it a little bit more. In 2009 average Canadian tuition was four thousand four hundred ninety two dollars Canadian. So it has gone up a significant amount in only 10 years and undergraduate programs in law dentistry and medicine have some of the highest tuitio n costs where as programs in math or business their tuition costs are a little bit lower. So it definitely depends on which program you are intending to go into. Cath Anne: [00:03:53] OK. Now lets move on to question number two. The average student spends about seven hundred dollars on books annually. Let me think about that a little bit more. So Im just thinking one of those big textbooks that you might buy for a class a hardcover textbook. Id say is usually around two hundred dollars and say youre taking five classes and you had to buy one of those for every class. I would say you might end up spending a little bit more than 700 dollars depending on the course youre taking. So Im going to go with false because I think you spend more money on textbooks. Lets see. Cath Anne: [00:04:44] OK so the answer is true. The average student spends about seven hundred seventy three dollars yearly on textbooks and you know what a lot of students dont realize that paying for university involves more than just paying tuition. There are many other costs involved in going to university or college. You also have to factor in things like food housing costs tuition of course books and lab fees. These are all additional costs on top of your yearly tuition costs. And when you think about it books alone could cost over three thousand dollars by the time you are finished your degree. My goodness that is so much money now. The average cost of tuition for a student who is choosing to live off campus is about nineteen thousand five hundred dollars. This includes things like transportation housing food and all additional costs that come along with living off campus. You also want to consider things like extracurriculars and fun events that you dont want to miss out on. If you are a student now the overall cost will certainly vary depending on your situation and whether you decide to live on campus or at home. Every student situation is certainly going to be different. Its also going to vary depending on what city you choose to live in because some cities are a lot more expensive than other cities. Its just important to remember that when you are choosing to become a student that there are more additional costs than simply paying tuition. There are many other costs involved in being a student and it should be something that is taken quite seriously. Now if youre nervous about the cost of tuition which some students are its a good idea to start saving early. You can also look into scholarship funds government aid and if there are any grants or student funding that are available in your area its also great to look into any private scholarship funds that you might qualify for. Most often this information can easily be found online or you could simply contact your schools financial aid department. And Im sure that theyd be happy to walk you through the process of applying for all of the financial aid that is available. Take advantage of it because as we noted university it can be quite an expense. Cath Anne: [00:07:19] OK. Question number three only eleven percent of Canadian undergraduates study abroad. Now this is a really interesting question because I feel like there are a lot of opportunities to study abroad in different universities these days. So let me think about that. Mm hmm. Im going to- even though there are a lot of opportunities I think Im going to say that is true because Im not sure that everyone takes advantage of those opportunities. OK lets check the answer. Cath Anne: [00:07:53] OK so we were right. It was true. Only 11 percent of undergraduate students choose to take advantage of studying abroad or doing a volunteer or internship program in another country. Whats more only 10 percent of students choose to study out of province and I think that is such an interesting number. Im super surprised to hear that only 10 percent of students choose to go to another province. The number one destination for study abroad students is the United Kingdom. Thats quite interesting. And another top three locations where students choose to study abroad are Australia France and Germany all wonderful places to travel. Cath Anne: [00:08:42] OK. Question number four. And this is a really interesting one. International students make up 3 percent of enrollment at Canadian post-secondary institutions. This is a tough one. OK three percent. Im really not sure I feel that might be right. OK Im going to go with you. OK. Lets see what it is. Cath Anne: [00:09:07] Oh I got it wrong its false. OK so in 1997, international students made up only three percent of postsecondary enrolments in Canadian universities. That is super interesting. OK. So 97. Thats quite a while ago. And in 2017, that number increased to 12 percent. So it went from 3 percent to 12 percent. So it seems like a lot of people are coming to Canada to enroll in university. In fact international students are enrolling at a faster pace than Canadian students in Canadian universities. Canada is becoming a more and more attractive location for folks overseas which is wonderful. Ontario followed by British Columbia and Quebec are home to 80 percent of Canadas international students. Wow that is amazing. While the highest number of international students come from China the fastest growing group of international students is from India. Cath Anne: [00:10:16] OK here we are on our final question. Question number five. And this will be an interesting one as well. There are more male students and then female students enrolled in Canadian post-secondary institutions. OK. This is a big question. Lets see. Im going to go with true I feel like it may have changed because I feel like thats a statistic that I heard a few years ago but Im still going to go with true. Cath Anne: [00:10:52] False. Oh my goodness. OK. So as of 2017 women continued a 10 year streak of outnumbering male students in post-secondary institutions. They make up fifty six percent of all enrollments in Canadian institutions. Thats incredible. Go girls. Great job. Women accounted for 74 percent of those enrolled in education and health related fields. Men however accounted for 73 percent of those enrolled in disciplines like architecture engineering math and computer sciences. Cath Anne: [00:11:37] Whoo. That was a lot of information. You might be living on campus you might be living with your parents maybe you choose to go to college or maybe youre more of a university person you might live in the city you might work part time or maybe you use your spare time to get involved in activities or clubs on campus. I would say you might end up spending a little bit more than 700 dollars depending on the course youre taking. So Im going to go with false because I think you spend more money on textbooks. The average student spends about seven hundred seventy three dollars yearly on textbooks and you know what a lot of students dont realize that paying for university involves more than just paying tuition. There are many other costs involved in going to university or college. You also have to factor in things like food housing costs tuition of course books and lab fees. These are all additional costs on top of your yearly tuition costs. And when you think about it books alone could cost over three thousand dollars by the time you are finished your degree. My goodness that is so much money now. The average cost of tuition for a student who is choosing to live off campus is about nineteen thousand five hundred dollars. This includes things like transportation housing food and all additional costs that come along with living off campus. You also want to consider things like extracurriculars and fun events that you dont want to miss out on. If you are a student now the overall cost will certainly vary depending on your situation and whether you decide to live on campus or at home. Every student situation is certainly going to be different. Its also going to vary depending on what city you choose to live in because some cities are a lot more expensive than other cities. And this is a really interesting one. International students make up 3 percent of enrollment at Canadian post-secondary institutions. This is a tough one. OK three percent. OK so in 1997, international students made up only three percent of postsecondary enrolments in Canadian universities. That is super interesting. OK. So 97. Thats quite a while ago. And in 2017, that number increased to 12 percent. So it went from 3 percent to 12 percent. So it seems like a lot of people are coming to Canada to enroll in university. In fact international students are enrolling at a faster pace than Canadian students in Canadian universities. International Trade Theories Absolute Comparative and Competitive Advantage Absolute advantage theory was first presented by Adam Smith in his book The Wealth of Nations in 1776. Smith provided the first concept of a nations wealth. Adam Smith is a grandfather of economics because he introduced two important concepts that many of the new trade theories are based on these two main concepts, which are specialization and free exchange (Cho et al., 2000). However, many arguments were made and many economists thought there was a problem with the theory of absolute advantage after David Ricardo published the theory of comparative cost (aka comparative advantage) in the early 19th century (Curry, 2000). Even though Smith and his followers introduced many important points for the thoughts of economic, it is too complicated with this simple version of trade theory in todays global economy. In 1990, Michael Porter introduced the diamond model of new competitiveness theory (Cho et al., 2000). These three trade theories are important in order to make a country or busine ss successfully. Therefore, the importance of absolute advantage, comparative advantage, and competitive advantage will be discussed thoroughly. Absolute advantage is the ability to produce a good with fewer resources than other producers (Ayers et al., 2005). According to Joseph A. Schumpeter (1954, 374), seems to have believed that under free trade all goods would be produced where their absolute costs in terms of labor are lowest (Van Marrewijk, 2009). Smith suggests that a country should export those goods and services for which it is more productive than other countries are, and import those goods and services for which other countries have more productive than it is. For instance, assume there are only two countries in the world- France and Japan; there are only two goods Wine and Clock radios; and there is only one factor of production- Labor. In France, one hour of labor can produce either two bottles of wine or three clock radios. In Japan, one hour of labor can produce either one bottle of wine or five clock radios. Therefore, the absolute advantage to produce wine is France because one hour of labor produces two b ottles in France, but Japan only produces one. The absolute advantage to produce clock radios is Japan because one hour of labor produces five clock radios in Japan while France only produces three. France is more efficient in the production of wine and Japan is more efficient in the production of clock radios. If these two countries are able to trade with one another, they both will be better off (Griffin et al., 2010). Comparative Advantage The theory of absolute advantage makes sense intuitively. Unfortunately, the theory had a problem. What if one country had an absolute advantage in both products? David Ricardo solved this problem by introducing the theory of comparative advantage, which states that a country should specialize and export those goods and services for which it is relatively more productive than other countries are and import those goods and services for which other countries are relatively more productive than it is (Griffin et al., 2010). Therefore, according to this theory, a country must specialize in order to gain from trade. A country has a comparative advantage if it can produce a good at a lower opportunity cost than could other countries. For instance, Michael Jordan selected basketball as his career and economics as his major. He had to make a choice in order to excel at other majors or careers. He chose basketball where he could shine in with his area of relative strength. On the other hand, Doug might take longer to mow yards than other people would take. Even if he cannot do anything well, he can still do some things relatively better than other things. People would still hire him because he would charge them less than the opportunity cost of their own time. In this case, Michael Jordan might hire him because the opportunity cost of his time would be too high. It would be unrelated that whether Michael could do his own lawn faster (Ayers et al., 2005). Even though the comparative advantage is very useful for explaining the reasons of trade and the increases welfare of the trading partners by trade, this theory is still incomplete. There are two problems in this theory. First, the extreme degree of specialization can be predicted by this theory, but in some countries, they not only produce one good but many import-competing products. Second, the trade based on differences in country productivity levels between countries, but it did not explain the existence of these di fferences (Cho et al., 2000). Competitive Advantage The leading theorist of competitive advantage theory is Michael E. Porter. According to Porter, National prosperity is created, not inherited. It grows with natural endowments in a country, as well as its labor pool, its interest rates, or its currencys value. The competitive advantage of nations is the capacity of its industry to innovate and upgrade to form a nations competitiveness. Companies benefit from having home based suppliers aggressively, domestic rivals strongly, and demanding local customers. Geographic cluster or companies concentrations established competitive advantage in different parts of the same industry. According to Porter, nations are most likely to succeed in industries where the national diamond is the most favorable. He believes that success in international trade comes from the four interrelated components, which are factor conditions, demand conditions, related and supporting industries, and firm strategy structure, and rivalry. Porter also concluded that their home environment is the most forward-looking, challenging, and dynamic so that nations succeed in particular industries (Cho et al., 2000). Companies achieve competitive advantage from acts of innovation. They approach innovation in both new technologies and new ways of doing things. Innovation can be represented in a new product design, new production process, or a new marketing strategy. Perceiving an entirely new market opportunity can contribute to create competitive advantage from some innovations. Innovation yields competitive advantage when competitors are slow to respond. For instance, in autos and home electronics industries, Japanese companies focused on smaller and lower capacity models that foreign competitors despised as low profit, low importance, and low attraction (Cho et al., 2000).
